MIG welders contain an acronym that stands for Metal Inert Gas, and are sometimes called wire feed welders. Unlike Arc welders, these welders use a spool of wire that is constantly fed, thus MIG welders to weld longer pieces of metal without the need to stop and change the welding rod. When using a MIG welder, the operator controls the delivery of the welding wire by simply adjusting the "Wire Feed Speed" on the wire feed welder and then pulling the trigger switch on the welder handle. Instead of surrounding the rod by means of gas flux, wire feed welders protect the weld from outside elements by propelling inert gas onto it.
